Safer Internet Day 2019 Educational resources for Parents and Carers

3 January 2019

For Safer Internet Day 2019, the UK Safer Internet Centre has created educational resources to support and educate young people aged 3-18 years old about online issues. These include resources to support parents and carers and enable them to spread the messages of Safer Internet Day in the home and beyond.

About Safer Internet Day 2019

Safer Internet Day 2019 will be celebrated globally on Tuesday 5th February 2019 with the global slogan of ‘Together for a better internet’.

This theme has been chosen by the Insafe network which is made up of Safer Internet Centres based in every European country. The theme encourages young people to work together to be positive, safe and respectful online.

In the UK the campaign will particularly empower young people to take control of their digital lives and consider how consent works in an online context. It will explore how young people ask, give and receive consent online. This could be in their friendships or relationships, how they take and share images and videos of how they manage their privacy and data.

Safer Internet Day Pack for Parents and Carers

The pack for parents and carers has been designed to support the messages young people will be receiving in schools, youth clubs, libraries and wider, the aim of this pack is to allow parents and carers to get involved with Safer Internet Day 2019.

The packs can be sent out to parents and carers to help them understand and support the day or it can be accessed directly by parents and carers who are seeking ways they can get involved and support their child.

This pack is focused on providing parents and carers with practical activities, conversation starters and information to empower them in supporting their child with navigating the issue of consent in a digital age in a safe, responsible and respectful way.

What is included in the pack?

Included within the pack is a set of conversation starters covering the issues of online use, safety, online consent and managing privacy and data. The pack also includes an adaptable family internet safety plan to encourage all families to work together in keeping each other safe online.

The impact of the parents and carers pack

For Safer Internet Day 2018 our Educational packs were downloaded over 800,000 times, and the day reached 30% of UK parents and carers!

Of the parents and carers who heard about the day last year:

  • 74% talked to their child about using the internet safely.
  • 64% said they have a better understanding about how to keep their children safe online.
  • 30% said they spoke to someone about concerns they had about their child on the internet.
