Day in the life of a Childnet Despatch and Administration Assistant

9 June 2016

Ellie joined the Childnet team in September 2015 as the Despatch and Administration Assistant, and has recently taken on her new role as Education Officer.

As we recruit for a new Despatch and Administration Assistant Ellie shares a typical day in the role.

Ellie’s blog:

The title of this blog is a little misleading – there is no ‘typical’ day for a Childnet Despatch and Administration Assistant!

The role is very diverse and requires you to be flexible in order to meet the needs of the busy schedule of the Childnet team.

A big part of the role is to manage the orders made on the Childnet Shop. This can get very busy, especially around September when schools are back and looking for resources to use in the upcoming year. It helps to have a head for numbers, so you can create the invoices quickly and accurately.

One of the other main responsibilities of the role is to support the Education Team. They are very often out of the office on school visits, so to lighten their workload (and the weight of their bags!) a very important task is send off the resources they will need to the school in advance of the upcoming activity day.

A big event in the Childnet calendar is Safer Internet Day. It happens every February, and is a day to celebrate all the work being done to make the internet a safer place, and to raise awareness of the issues we still need to tackle. In the run up to the day, the Despatch and Administration Assistant will be doing tasks such as uploading messages of support on the Safer Internet Day website, helping to distribute promotional material and fielding requests from media and the press.

Childnet will often host launch events or attend conferences, so another key task is to ensure all the resources are printed, badges are made and the guest list is updated so that they day runs smoothly. There are always last minute changes to be made, so the role also requires you to be proactive and to prioritise.

You wouldn’t be able to do this role without an interest in current online issues and a strong commitment to Childnet’s mission and values. We are a small team with a passion for helping make the internet a great and safe place for children, and will go above and beyond to help make this a reality. Being the Despatch and Administration Assistant gives you the opportunity to support this mission, whilst also learning a lot about the ever-growing field of online safety.

For those applying for the current position of Despatch and Administration Assistant applicants will work closely with the Childnet Digital Leaders Programme Project Manager, carrying out a wide range of administrative duties, such as database management and the day to day running of the programme.
