Help and Advice What do I need to know about online gaming?

Advertising

Adverts are ways for companies to show you other websites, apps and things to buy.

Adverts are ways for companies to show you other websites, apps and things to buy. Online adverts are normally designed to get us to click on them. They can appear as pop-ups, side bars or as full screen in an app.

It can be annoying if you see lots of adverts in a game you are playing, but remember if a game is free then it’s probably adverts that help make the company money to keep it running.

It’s always best to avoid clicking on adverts, as you don’t know where they will take you but they can sometimes be tricky to spot.

How to spot adverts

Look out for anything:

  • that looks different to the game
  • you weren’t expecting to appear
  • that wants you to click on it (like a spinner, interactive task or a link to another site)

Top Tips

If you do see an advert, try to avoid clicking on it. For some video adverts you may need to let it play to the end before you can go back to your game. For some pop ups there may be a small cross in the corner which you can use to close the advert.

Remember:

  • If you see anything in an advert which is upsetting or unsuitable, always tell an adult right away.
  • If you accidentally click on an advert, don’t worry. You can still speak to an adult and get help.
  • If a game has lots of adverts and it’s annoying you, it might be time to try a new game!

Or you could use the time when the advert is showing to take a break – get a drink or chat with your family and come back to it later.
