Keeping young children safe online

15 May 2013

Using the internet with young children can be such an enjoyable experience for both you and your children. There are some lovely websites around for little ones who are starting to explore the internet for the first time, and these can provide some really beneficial learning opportunities too. It’s important to start thinking about online safety as soon as you can, so that you are in the best position to help your children navigate the online world as carefully and responsibly as possible.

If you have concerns about filtering and parental controls that are available then our Parents and Carers Guide to Technology is a great starting point. The guide contains advice and safety tips relating to smartphones, gaming devices, tablets and other internet enabled devices such as the iPod Touch. Also on the UK Safer Internet Centre site you’ll find short advice videos created by Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and BT that explain the controls available to filter your broadband at home. We’ve also developed tailored e-safety tips for parents and carers with young children, to help you and your younger family members get the best out of the internet, so if you’ve not thought about how or where to start, these can offer you simple and practical advice.

Finally, it’s no secret that children love a great bedtime story! We have two stories written for young internet users. The Adventures of Smartie the Penguin, and Digiduck’s Big Decision. Smartie the Penguin receives a new computer for his birthday but needs help from the reader along the way. The suggestedTime to Chat‘ questions throughout the book enable you to talk with your child about what is happening and require your children to give Smartie the best advice possible to resolve each situation. With a song to learn and a simple, repeated, safety message, it’s a lovely way to talk about what to do when you need help on the internet. You can learn the song in advance by watching the ‘Smartie in action’ video available. Digiduck’s Big Decision is all about being a good friend to others online, and thinking about your friends’ feelings before you act. With stunning illustrations and a difficult decision to make, Digiduck is sure to captivate the audience from start to finish!
