New privacy and safety features available on Instagram

16 March 2021

Instagram have released their latest safety and privacy features on the app. These features are designed to improve the experience and safety of young people using Instagram. This blog takes a closer look at some of these new features.

Privacy encouraged at signup

Instagram have added a new setting around private and public accounts for under 18s. These settings are applied when a user who is under 18 creates a new account, they are shown a screen where they can select either a public or private account. On this screen there is more information about what these different account types mean, and how they can change experiences on the app.

If the user doesn’t choose to set their account to ‘private,’ Instagram will send them notifications on an ongoing basis with information on the benefits of a private account and reminding them to check their settings.

Restricting Direct Messages

Instagram have also announced new measures around direct messages. These new settings adults from sending messages to under 18s who don’t already follow them. When an adult tries to message a young person who doesn’t follow them, the adult will receive a notification stating that they will be unable to send the message.

Instagram will also send notifications to young people explaining the need to be cautious in conversations with adults they’re already connected to.

Further advice around Instagram

We always recommend when setting up an account with your child to set the age accurately, as many settings and features available on social media sites to protect young people are only available on accounts with an age of 18 or younger. Setting up profiles with the correct age allow you to ensure that your child will have a safe and fun time online.
