Talk to your child about online safety this Safer Internet Day.

28 January 2019

For Safer Internet Day on the 5th February we have created a range of resources for parents and carers this safer internet day, including fun activities, conversation starters, top tips and more.

How parents can get involved in Safer Internet Day:

Safer Internet Day is a fantastic opportunity to reflect as a family on how you can use the internet and technology safely, responsibly and positively. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, foster carer, aunt, uncle or older sibling – we can all play a role in empowering children to enjoy their time online!

This year, the UK Safer Internet Centre is particularly focusing on how consent works in an online context and exploring how young people ask, give, and receive consent online. This could be in their friendships or relationships, how they take and share images and videos or how they manage their privacy and data.

Last year 45% of young people across the UK heard about Safer Internet Day, and as a result of the day 74% of parents and carers across the UK said they talked to their child about using the internet safely. We want Safer Internet Day to have an even bigger impact this year, and we need your help to do this! To help you to get involved in the day we have created a range of activities, top tips and more!

Safer Internet Day top tips

Our top tips for parents and carers give advice and guidance on how to support children and young people online.

These tips are a great way to ensure that parents and carers are supporting their children and giving them the tools to stay safe and positive online. They highlight ways to have a conversation, take a balanced approach and to make use of the tools available.

Watch our Safer Internet Day Videos

In our SID TV film for parents and carers we put young people and their parents head-to-head in a game show and asked them questions about consent online. We wanted to find out if parents and their children have the same or differing opinions on a range of online consent topics.

We have also released a new video for parents and carers where young people look at how it makes them feel when something is posted without their consent. The young people talk about the reasons parents may share content online, and how they handle issues around consent online.
