Meet Ruby

Where are you from?

North East

What do you love about going online?

What I love most about going online is the community and different perspectives of life that you can gain. The internet for me can be a place in which can be used for positive to learn more about others, the world and all the different possibilities out there! Online I really like watching people travel around the world and their experiences in different places helping me feel as though I am exploring the world with them!!

Why did you apply to join the Childnet Youth Advisory Board?

I want to share my perspective and learn about the similarities and differences of other people’s experiences online and work with others to think about the online issues young people face today. I also wanted to join the Youth Advisory board to share the experiences of young children often overlooked and unheard . Working with children under 11, I wanted to share their experiences of growing up in an age in which technology plays a central role in their lives, socialisation and education.

If you could change one thing about the internet, what would it be and why?

I would make it a more welcoming uplifting place which celebrates people for their differences and individuality. In an age of social media and unrealistic harmful beauty standards I would make the internet a place which embraces people for who they are recognising that while we are all so different that isn’t something that we should change but instead celebrate! Instead of pushing a beauty ideal and unrealistic expectations for people to fit into I would make the internet a place in which we can all be who we are!

If you could give one piece advice for adults about keeping children safe online, what would it be?

I would want adults to further understand the technology and content that children are given access to when they go online. I feel that it is important that children only have access to content that is appropriate to their age range therefore I would advise adults to make sure that the content children have access to is in line with their age as if children have access to content that it’s appropriate for them It can put them at risk of harm and exploitation
